The View from Halfway Down
I am killing myself slowly. I am only 24 but since 17 I have been drinking as much as I can. Walks of shame, waking up and vomiting at work, I've done it all. In these years there have been two distinct reactions I have gotten from people who I have expressed this two outside my girlfriend. The first reaction is the Wounded Puppy response. The reaction people immediately have about it is to treat you like a kicked puppy. They talk down to you like you do not know what you are doing and act as if you are not in control. The other reaction is the deflection or self absolution. This is most commonly the reaction from former addicts or people too self involved to realize they are a drunk. I wish I could see myself out from under the thumb of both of these perspectives. Getting better would be much easier.
